Over the years, Eden Park has hosted numerous memorable moments for the All Blacks, including a Rugby World Cup victory in 2011, clashes with the British & Irish Lions in 2005 and 2017, and multiple Bledisloe Cup triumphs. The team recently extended their streak by securing two more victories at the venue, including a 24-17 win over South Africa in a Rugby Championship match and a 33-24 defeat of Australia to retain the Bledisloe Cup.
Ireland Presents Formidable Challenge
The upcoming match against Ireland is anticipated to be a significant test for the All Blacks. Both teams enter the sold-out fixture with two wins from two matches in the Nations Championship. The All Blacks have defeated France and Italy, while Ireland secured victories against Australia and Japan, setting the stage for another chapter in their rivalry.
Ireland has never defeated the All Blacks at Eden Park, but they have emerged as a challenging opponent for New Zealand over the past decade. The fixture carries importance for Nations Championship points and the continuation of the All Blacks‘ unbeaten record at their home ground.
All Blacks hooker Codie Taylor described the upcoming Test as the team’s biggest challenge of the year so far. He noted that Ireland is a strong side with a clear playing style, having won their last six matches. Taylor emphasised the need for the All Blacks to step up physically and defensively against their Irish counterparts.
Head coach Dave Rennie acknowledged the respect for Ireland‘s ability, noting their previous series victory in New Zealand. He stressed the importance of preparation and mindset for the match. Rennie also mentioned that the All Blacks are looking to display further improvements after a mixed performance against France and a better showing against Italy.
The match is expected to play a role in determining whether the All Blacks or the Springboks will reach the Nations Championship final. The two rivals are currently level on competition points. This fixture will also be the final match before the All Blacks embark on a tour to South Africa, which includes four matches and three Tests against the world champions, followed by another Test in the United States.
Team Preparations and Player Availability
Regarding player selections, injuries are not expected to be a major factor for this week’s match. Outside back/midfielder Rieko Ioane has joined the squad after returning from his Irish club, Leinster, due to shoulder issues affecting Leroy Carter and Fehi Fineanganofo. It is anticipated that Caleb Clarke, who was not required last weekend, will likely start on the left wing due to his ability under the high ball.
Flanker Luke Jacobson, who was withdrawn at halftime against Italy due to cramp, and lock Patrick Tuipulotu, who has not played in this campaign due to a calf niggle, are both available. Rennie also provided an update on lock Fabian Holland, who has been out with a dislocated shoulder. Holland is a possibility for selection after having a hit out with Otago before the squad for the South Africa trip is named.
Former skipper Scott Barrett remains unavailable for the South Africa trip due to back surgery in May. The All Blacks will announce a squad of 44 players for the South Africa tour approximately seven days after the Ireland Test, with a likely split of six forwards and four backs, or potentially seven forwards and three backs.
The All Blacks will take on Ireland at 7:10 PM NZT on Saturday at Eden Park.
