Following England’s 2-1 quarter-final victory against Norway in Miami, a moment of tension arose between head coach Thomas Tuchel and midfielder Jude Bellingham. Tuchel, in his post-match interview, described England’s performance as “sloppy” and “lucky”. When asked about these comments, Bellingham initially dismissed them, stating, “Yeah, well, whatever.” He later elaborated, suggesting that Tuchel might not understand the challenges of playing against a team featuring players like Erling Haaland, Martin Ødegaard, Antonio Nusa, and Alexander Sorloth.
Bellingham‘s remarks were considered unusual for a player commenting on his team’s manager. Kane reiterated this stance in a subsequent interview, noting that Bellingham’s comments were made shortly after an exhausting match.
The match against Norway was also marked by controversy surrounding Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions. Norway had a goal disallowed in the second half after replays showed Erling Haaland pushing England midfielder Elliot Anderson. French referee Clément Turpin reviewed the incident at a pitchside monitor and ruled it a foul, leading to the disallowance of what would have been Norway’s go-ahead goal.
Norway also argued that VAR should have intervened on Bellingham’s equalising goal, claiming the ball struck an overhead camera cable before the attack. Norway captain Martin Ødegaard commented on the officiating, stating, “We didn’t get much help from the referee.” Erling Haaland’s father also expressed his dissatisfaction on social media, suggesting Norway felt “robbed.”
Tuchel himself has previously criticised the refereeing at this World Cup, calling it “erratic” and “unreliable” earlier in the month. He stated that the officiating was “just not good enough.” This World Cup marks the third consecutive tournament to feature VAR technology.

Bellingham’s personality has also been characterised by an occasional “spikiness.” Tuchel has previously acknowledged this aspect, stating that Bellingham’s “edge needs to be channelled towards our opponent.” In a past interview, Tuchel also mentioned that certain aspects of Bellingham’s behaviour “can be a bit repulsive,” particularly for those who do not see him off the pitch. Despite these past remarks and the recent exchange, Tuchel has consistently praised Bellingham’s commitment and performance during the World Cup, calling him “world class.” The pair have been observed in animated discussions during matches, including the knockout games against DR Congo and Norway. England is scheduled to play their semi-final match against Argentina on Tuesday.
