Broncos’ title defence remains active after win over Panthers
Broncos Secure Crucial Victory
The Brisbane Broncos secured a 14-12 upset victory over Penrith, keeping their title defence aspirations alive. This win marks a significant step for the team, which now faces the challenge of winning seven more matches to qualify for the NRL finals. Centre Kotoni Staggs highlighted the importance of fullback Reece Walsh’s performance, stating that when Walsh is playing at his best, the team needs to get him the ball.
The match saw the Broncos return to the winners’ circle with a nearly full-strength squad. Key players such as halves Ezra Mam and Adam Reynolds, along with forwards Pat Carrigan and Payne Haas, were back on the field after injuries. This marked the first time in several months that the team had its top players available, a factor that forward Xavier Willison noted eliminated excuses for not performing.
The Broncos’ pack also delivered a strong performance, with Jordan Riki making 20 runs for 175 metres and Willison contributing 22 runs for 223 metres. Together, they accumulated 218 post-contact metres. Willison expressed gratitude for the team’s full roster, particularly praising Walsh’s leadership from the back.
Panthers’ Resilience in Defeat
Despite suffering their third loss in four matches, Penrith Panthers coach Ivan Cleary expressed pride in his team’s resilience against the Broncos. Cleary noted that the Panthers did not panic, even when facing sustained pressure throughout the game. The team spent much of the second half defending, with only 37 percent of possession, after an even split in the first half.
Cleary acknowledged the Broncos’ control of the ball and effective kicking game, specifically commending Walsh’s performance, which included a match-winning cut-out pass to Josiah Karapani for a try. The coach admitted he could not recall a game where his side had been under such continuous pressure, stating that the team felt like they ran out of time.
While proud of his team’s defensive effort, Cleary also indicated areas for improvement. He also hinted at potential upcoming contract extensions for the club, following the recent securing of Mitch Kenny’s services until the end of 2031.
Upcoming Challenges for Brisbane
The Broncos now prepare for their next match against the Cowboys, a game that involves a 2000km journey from CommBank Stadium in Sydney. Willison emphasised the importance of preparation and hard training for the upcoming fixture, especially against formidable forwards like Jason Taumalolo, Jeremiah Nanai, and Reuben Cotter.
The team’s path to the finals includes a series of challenging encounters against other top-eight teams. Following the Cowboys match, the Broncos are scheduled to face the Knights, Dolphins, and Warriors at Suncorp Stadium. Their schedule also includes games against the Raiders in Canberra, the Storm at home, and the Bulldogs in Sydney.
Staggs expressed confidence in the team’s ability to achieve the required seven wins, citing their past experience of winning five of their last seven games to finish fourth in the regular season last year. He stressed the importance of maintaining the right attitude, focusing on learning and continuous improvement each week.
