English gymnast Gabriel Langton has been cleared of serious injury following a significant fall during the Commonwealth Games on Friday. The incident occurred on the opening day of competition, leading to his immediate hospitalisation for assessment.
Langton, who was a late call-up for Team England, fell headfirst from three metres after missing his catch on the horizontal metal bar. The 19-year-old underwent multiple scans on Saturday, which yielded “very positive results,” according to Team England officials.
He is expected to be discharged from hospital on Saturday evening. Despite the serious nature of the fall, Langton is reported to be in good spirits and has expressed gratitude for the support messages and medical care received. He is also looking forward to rejoining his team to celebrate their silver medal.
Incident and Team Reaction
The fall prompted a lengthy halt to the gymnastics proceedings as medical personnel attended to Langton on the competition floor. He received treatment for several minutes before being placed on a stretcher with head and neck support and transported to hospital.
Team officials confirmed that Langton was conscious, moving, and speaking with doctors after the crash. Team England released a statement expressing thanks to the medical teams for their immediate assistance.
The incident cast a shadow over the remainder of the men’s team final. After the competition resumed, Team England secured a silver medal, finishing behind Canada. Australia claimed the bronze medal, marking their first men’s team gymnastics medal since the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Langton‘s teammate, Luke Whitehouse, commented on the incident, stating that gymnasts must “forget about it and reset” when such events occur, emphasising the need to focus on routines one skill at a time. Whitehouse also noted that “gymnastics is such a dangerous sport and things like this remind us of that.”
Canada‘s Felix Dolci also acknowledged the inherent dangers of the sport, describing gymnastics as “very, very difficult and complicated.” He extended thoughts to Gabriel and the English team.
Elsewhere at the Games
While the gymnastics competition saw a dramatic moment, other events at the Commonwealth Games continued. Scotland‘s Duncan Scott delivered a gold medal performance in the men’s 200m individual medley. Scott, considered Scotland‘s most decorated athlete, secured the win in 1 minute 56.38 seconds, setting a new Commonwealth record.
Scott‘s victory came against a strong field that included world and Olympic champions such as New Zealander Lewis Clareburt and England‘s Tom Dean. Clareburt took silver, while Dean earned bronze. Scott has accumulated eight Olympic medals, 10 world medals, and 14 Commonwealth Games medals.
In swimming, Adam Ramsay-Peaty advanced to the 100m breaststroke final after winning his semi-final. He faced a challenge from Jersey‘s Filip Nowacki, an 18-year-old who pushed him in the second half of the race. Ramsay-Peaty held on to win by less than half a second. Nowacki expressed confidence in his ability to challenge Ramsay-Peaty in the final.
Australia had a successful night in the pool, securing four gold medals. Lani Pallister won the 400m freestyle, beating New Zealander Erika Fairweather. Shortly after, Hannah Fredericks, also from Australia, won the 200m backstroke. Australia then added two more golds by winning both the women’s and men’s 4x100m freestyle relays, with England taking silver in both relay events.
Gabriel Langton, who had not qualified for any remaining events, will be reunited with his team after his discharge from hospital on Saturday evening.
