Roosters, Broncos maintain unbeaten records; Warriors secure narrow win
The Roosters and Broncos have continued their unbeaten streaks with strong performances in the latest round of NRLW action. The Roosters secured a decisive victory over Wests Tigers, while the Broncos overcame the Knights. Meanwhile, the Warriors managed a close win against the Eels.
The reigning premiers, the Broncos, achieved their fourth consecutive win by defeating the Knights at Totally Workwear Stadium. Despite a competitive first half from Newcastle, the Broncos took control after the break, scoring three unanswered tries to seal a 30-12 victory. Fullback Tamika Upton was a key player, contributing significantly to both offence and defence, and finishing with 217 run metres.
Roosters dominate Wests Tigers
The Roosters concluded Round 4 with a 48-10 thrashing of Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval. Five-eighth Jocelyn Kelleher was instrumental in the Roosters’ success, providing five try assists. Millie Elliott also made a strong impact, running for 153 metres and breaking six tackles. Coming off the bench, Aliyah Nasio ran for 138 metres in her first game since the previous year’s grand final.
Isabelle Kelly, the Roosters’ captain, was a prominent figure, recording 87 run metres, two try assists, one line break, and two tackle breaks. She combined effectively with Jayme Fressard, who ran for 70 metres and scored two tries. The Roosters maintained 57 per cent possession and an 85 per cent completion rate in the first half, establishing a 22-0 lead.
During the match, Jess Sergis crossed for a try in her 50th game, bringing her career total to 32 tries. This try also originated from a kick by Jocelyn Kelleher. Sergis briefly left the field with a leg issue after a dangerous tackle by Portia Burke, who was placed on report, but later returned after passing a HIA. Amber Hall, returning from a calf injury, scored a try in her first touch of the ball, extending the Roosters’ lead.
The Tigers faced disciplinary action during the game, with Brook Talataina sent to the sin bin for a hip drop tackle on Jess Sergis. Earlier, Roosters skipper Isabelle Kelly was also sent to the sin bin for a hip drop tackle on Harmony Crichton.
Warriors secure narrow victory
At Eric Tweedale Stadium, the Warriors narrowly defeated the Parramatta Eels with a 14-12 scoreline. A forward pass on the final play of the game denied the Eels their first win of the season. Abbi Church, the Eels’ fullback, was a standout performer, scoring two solo tries and accumulating 231 run metres. However, the Eels were noted to be missing strike power, particularly with Rory Owen ruled out due to a HIA.
The Warriors saw the return of several key players from injury for this match. Gayle Broughton made her comeback at halfback after a two-game absence due to a quad injury. She had previously delivered a player of the match performance in her club debut against the Bulldogs. Patricia Maliepo, who had played halfback in the first three matches, moved to the interchange bench.
Other returning players for the Warriors included winger Payton Takimoana and back rower Kaiyah Atai. Takimoana, who scored 15 tries in 11 games in her rookie season, returned after a shoulder injury sustained in the season-opening win against the Bulldogs. Atai, the 2025 players’ player of the year, played her first match of the season at loose forward after recovering from a broken thumb suffered during a preseason trial against the Broncos in Christchurch.
The Warriors are currently sixth on the ladder heading into the fourth round, with four points, placing them two points behind the unbeaten Roosters and Broncos. The Eels, in contrast, entered the match following a 12-50 loss to the Titans and previous defeats to the Wests Tigers and St George Illawarra.
The Warriors’ upcoming schedule includes back-to-back road trips, with their next game being a Magic Round fixture against the Titans in Wagga Wagga on August 2.
