Springboks name 43-man squad for All Blacks series and Argentina Test
Rassie Erasmus has announced a 43-man Springboks squad for the upcoming Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry Series against the All Blacks and a Test match against Argentina. The squad will gather in Johannesburg to prepare for the match in Buenos Aires, while five players have been released to their franchises to play against New Zealand.
One player has been placed on standby as he settles with his new club. The Springboks have also received a boost with the return of several players from injury.
Squad Selections and Returns
The squad sees the return of 10 experienced international players who were previously sidelined due to injury. These include Eben Etzebeth, Siya Kolisi, and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu. Etzebeth and Kolisi were late withdrawals from a previous match against England but have recovered and are now part of the squad.
Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who played in the number 10 jersey last year, is also returning. Other returning players include Lood de Jager, Franco Mostert, Handre Pollard, Morne van den Berg, Ethan Hooker, Canan Moodie, and Andre Esterhuizen. The return of Etzebeth, de Jager, and Mostert significantly bolsters the second-row options, adding 298 international caps of experience.
The coaching staff will also benefit from the return of Pollard from a hamstring strain and Feinberg-Mngomezulu at fly-half, as well as Morne van den Berg at scrum-half. Utility backs Ethan Hooker and Canan Moodie, along with Andre Esterhuizen, are also fit.
Five players have been released from the squad to play for their franchises in midweek matches against the All Blacks. These players are Ntuthuko Mchunu, Evan Roos, Andre-Hugo Venter, Embrose Papier, and Jaco Williams. Ruben van Heerden, who recently moved clubs, will remain on standby.
Key Player Performances and Prospects
Vusi Moyo, a 20-year-old pivot, has been retained in the squad despite the return of more experienced fly-halves. His inclusion is seen as an opportunity for the coaching team to nurture his potential, particularly if there are any setbacks in the position. However, if he does not feature in the four Tests against the All Blacks, he may miss an opportunity to play for his club against Dave Rennie’s team.
Paul de Villiers impressed in Kolisi’s absence, earning a man-of-the-match award in a match against Wales. His performances have drawn praise, and he is now vying for a place in the matchday 23. Vincent Tshituka, a versatile player who can feature in both the back and second-row, has also been selected, valued for his lineout prowess and leadership.
Elrigh Louw, initially left out, has earned his place in the squad after being called up following an injury to Riley Norton. Louw, who missed last year due to a setback, showed strong form against Scotland. Hooker Johan Grobbelaar, who has been in and out of the squad, appears to be establishing himself as a key player behind Malcolm Marx.
Carlu Sadie, who made his Test debut against Wales, is also in contention for a spot against the All Blacks. Erasmus has opted to split the squad into two groups: one will travel to Argentina, and the other will remain in Johannesburg to prepare for the New Zealand Tests. This strategy aims to provide all players with an opportunity to compete for places in the RGR series squad.
The Springboks will face Los Pumas in Buenos Aires on August 8. Following this, they will play four Tests against the All Blacks: on August 22 at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, August 29 at DHL Stadium in Cape Town, September 5 at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, and September 12 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, USA.
